Open call for the 2nd 4D Award, Digital Rights by Design

The 4D Call offers financial support of 15000 € to two initiatives that are framed in digital commons and rights.

Fundació .cat, together with Xnet, presents the 2nd 4D Award, Digital Rights by Design, which aims to support projects focused on intervene so that digitalisation is democratic and/or digital rights are applied systemically (possibility of scaling with wide impact), by design and by default, in the public and/or private sphere. Initiatives that opt to be awarded must be focused on action in terms of digital commons and rights, such as: technological developments, protocols to change institutional and/or general hàbits, legislative amendments, just to mention a few examples. 

The 4D Call offers two financial provisions of 15000€ to implement projects by European entities, consortia or individuals, whether either already running or already partially funded. 

The deadline for submitting the projects will be open until May 18 of 2025, and it is necessary to register through the 4D Award website https://4d.cat/en/award/ 

These awards are part of the 4D, Democratic Digitalisation and Digital Rights Program of Fundació .cat, that aims to generate knowledge and promote the defence of digital rights in an increasingly digitalised world.  

The coordination of this program falls to the digital rights specialist, Simona Levi, a recognized expert in this field, founder of Xnet and activist committed to the defense of online freedoms.  

About the 2024 4D Award 

On October 9, during the 4D European Conference, Fundació .cat and Xnet team presented the awards for the 1st 4D Award Digital Rights by Design. 

After a project pre-selection phase, the call had 18 finalist projects, all of them with free or open licenses and from very diverse places in Europe, such as Catalonia, the Balearic Islands, Euskadi, Cantabria, Murcia, Andalusia, Madrid, Castile and Leon, Germany, United Kingdom, Netherlands, France, Italy, Bosnia Herzegovina, Cyprus, Denmark, Portugal, Slovenia, Switzerland and Turkey. 

From among these 18 finalists, Fundació .cat and Xnet chose 3 essential projects, which offer solutions for democratic digitalisation
