The puntCAT Foundation rewards the best student-designed websites and apps in Catalan

04 December 2019

This lunchtime, the puntCAT Foundation, the private entity that manages the .cat domain, presented the awards for the 5th edition of “Webs al punt.cat” (“.cat websites”), a competition open to compulsory secondary school (ESO) and Baccalaureate (Batxillerat) students and intermediate (CFGM) or higher (CFGS) level vocational training students from Catalan-speaking territories to design a website or app in Catalan within their academic area. At the event, which was held at CosmoCaixa in Barcelona, an award was given, among others, to a website that gives guidance to students taking the University Entrance Examinations (Baccalaureate and intermediate vocational training categories), one involving an educational geolocation game around the Catalan geography (higher level vocational training category) and one that teaches about the networks of villages that make up the region of La Garrotxa (compulsory secondary school student category). In addition, this was the first year that an award was given in the new category of apps in Catalan. The winner was a mobile app that enables anyone who downloads it to play the game Battleship.

The jury of experts from the world of education and ICT chose eighteen of the awards given out today. Among these is the AMIC – puntCAT Foundation Special Award for Future Journalists, coordinated by the Association of Information and Communication Media (AMIC) together with the puntCAT Foundation, for the best digital journalism. This year the award went to a technology information portal. An award was also given to the website with the most votes (votes were cast online).

This year the competition, which was created by the puntCAT Foundation to promote awareness of new technologies, participants’ creativity and the correct use of Catalan, had the highest participation since its creation. In total, 1,856 students in academic year 2014/2015, from 609 groups in 105 schools in Catalonia, the Balearic Islands and Valencia, took part.

The award ceremony, which was hosted by the journalist Xantal Llavina, also had the participation of Ricard Huguet, president of the puntCAT Foundation; Santi Ribera, CEO of the puntCAT Foundation; Antoni Arasanz, advisor to the Catalan Government’s Department of Education; Ester Franquesa, Director General of Linguistic Policy of the Catalan Government’s Department of Culture; Josep Ritort, Secretary General of the Association of Information and Communication Media (AMIC); and Pau Font, creator and promoter of Appsencatala.cat.

The 5th edition of “Webs al punt .cat” has enjoyed the collaboration of Port Aventura, Barcelona FC, Munich and the Catalan Broadcasting Corporation (Corporació Catalana de Mitjans Audiovisuals), all of which provided several of the prizes awarded to winning students.
