We present a report confirming that Google has caused two out of every three Catalan websites to lose traffic.
Fundació .cat, as an entity that is part of the Aliança per la presència digital del català, has compiled a report analyzing the web traffic of 639 multilingual websites in the public, academic, media, and business sectors.
This report, commissioned by the Government of Catalonia, aims to quantify the loss of visibility for Catalan in web searches during the past months and provide data to the companies involved in order to better diagnose the problem and work towards a solution.
Main results:
• 66.5% (more than two-thirds) of the analyzed multilingual websites have been affected by the problem, experiencing a loss of traffic to their Catalan language versions.
• There is a strong correlation (an average of 80%) between traffic in Catalan and Spanish, meaning that the Spanish version gains almost one page view for every page view lost in the Catalan version.
• Search engines have stopped respecting the explicit language preferences of users.
• The analysis of the websites shows that the impact is not the same for all websites, regardless of the primary language they use for their audience.
